In Luke's Gospel we read that Jesus said, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.”
Reflecting on these words, Fr. Jay Scott Newman wrote, "Passover is the Feast of Feasts which recalls the deliverance of the children of Israel from slavery in Egypt, and it is celebrated with family and friends by a solemn and sacred meal of the paschal lamb whose blood is deliverance from death and whose flesh is nourishment for the journey to freedom.
The Lord Jesus had been to Jerusalem for Passover many times in his life, but on this last occasion when he would transform the Passover Seder of Israel into the Holy Eucharist of the Church, the Savior said to the Twelve: “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer … for … I shall not eat it again until there is fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”
And now we are gathered here to eat the Passover in the Holy Eucharist, to give thanks for Christ’s sacrifice, to receive the forgiveness of our sins, and to share in the paschal mystery or passover sacrament by which he continues in our midst, unites us to himself, and nourishes us unto everlasting life."
